MARION HARRIS (Born 1896 – Died 1944)

Harris began her recording career at Victor in 1916.
Her Victor career spanned three years.
Harris signed an exclusive record contract with Columbia in 1920.
She had more freedom in material for her recordings.
Her singing style develops into a more stylized
interpretation during this period.
When she signed with Brunswick in 1922, the label
featured her on the cover of their late year supplement.
By this period her interpretations are further refined
displaying her unique style of painting the songs with her voice.

She emerged as one of the hottest female jazz singers of the age.
Between 1931 and 1933, when she performed on such NBC radio
shows as The Ipana Troubadors and Rudy Vallee's
The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour, she was billed by NBC as
"The Little Girl with the Big Voice”. In early 1931 she performed in
London, returning for long engagements at the Café de Paris.
In London she appeared in the musical Ever Green and broadcast on BBC radio.
She continued to be a popular vaudeville and cabaret artist into the late 1930’s.
She died in 1944 in a hotel fire caused by her smoking in bed.

This CD includes her 1st group of Columbia recordings made at the
2nd stage of her recording career.
These recordings have more blues style with better phrasing of the lyrics with more
song interpretation development.
